Mary Poppins the musical began with previews on September 15th, 2004 and officially opened on September 18th for a limited engagement at the Bristol Hippodrome in England. On December 15th it began its run at the Prince Edward Theatre. The show began its life on Broadway on November 16th 2006 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Only the really huge Broadway shows like Wicked tickets have proved more popular than this kids' favorite!

The show incorporates elements form both the children's books and the 1964 movie production of Mary Poppins. It also features the songs originally written by the Sherman Brothers for the movie with additional music and lyrics written by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The show was directed by Richard Eyre with co-direction by Matthew Bourne. It was choreographed by Stephen Mear and Matthew Bourne. On March 17th, 2005 Julie Andrews, who had played Mary Poppins in the film, was a guest to the show and praised the cast for their interpretation of the story. The success of the West End production of Mary Poppins led to it's addition of the Broadway show, however some minor changes were made, changes that ended up being adopted to the London version. It was announced in June of 2007 that the London version of the musical would come to a close on January 12th, 2008 with an international version of the show premiering their later in the year.
